I saw this at Andrew Bolt. Last year the Vic Govt ordered 50GL water from Wonthaggi when there was no need for the water as dams look OK(despite the mad wasting of water on environmental flows). The sequence of news is –
Damaged power cable shuts down start up of desalination plant 30 Dec 2016
Desalination plant faces ‘substantial consequences’ over looming water deadline 11 Jan 2017
and now – Desal plant operator ships in diesel generators in desperate bid to deliver first water order 22 Feb 2017 You just could not make this up.
2.8° on the 21st – previous record 3° in 1985 – I looked for pre 1939 data but a lot of early daily data has not been digitised. Also broke record at Cootamundra Airport 2.9° vs 3.2 in 1998 – data from 1995. Smashed record at Cootamundra Post Office – the Airport 2.9° vs 5° in 1967 – data from 1957-1995.
Make map of minimum anomaly for the 21st Feb 2017
How bizarre is this – heavy rain and floods starting 9/10 Feb – but no Feb 2017 rain recorded yet – while rain is so easy to measure and record.
BoM station Mundaring Weir 9031 has no data later than March 2016
BoM station Victoria Dam 9216 is missing March and Jun, Oct to Dec 2016 nothing yet for 2017
BoM station Churchman Brook 9010 has many periods in 2016 where no daily readings were taken – arrows. And no data yet for 2017
BoM station Wungong Dam 9044 has all months for 2016 now and Jan 2017 as well(applause).
BoM station Serpentine Main Dam 9115 has nothing after May 2016 – nothing for 2017 yet.
Can anybody recall anything like this tardy recording by the BoM anywhere else?
The rain that caused the floods from around York and Northam we saw on TV news was mostly from 9 Feb to 11 Feb and left this broad band of 100mm+ rain from Perth SW into the wheatbelt.
There were signs from Perth a week ago – then the Illawarra Mercury had a crack at it – then on ABC TV The Drum Episode 15 last night host Ellen Fanning introduced her first segment with “and Labor’s backdown on its renewable energy target”. If anybody sees more on this huge story in the MSM please pass on links. Thanks to Lance for Youtube clip. And here is a longer version on Youtube from Lance on Labor’s inability to keep to their Renewables Target script.
Hazelwood 1,600MW of electricity generation is due to close at end of March. This must further stress our already strained power supplies and rack up prices further. People concerned that this would weaken our electricity grid should email politicians asking that Hazelwood be kept open. I will be emailing the PM, Treasurer and several other members of the Commonwealth Parliament. For information email to –
Keep.Hazelwood.Open (the you know what symbol) engineer.com
Terry McCrann had a good article – Keep Hazelwood power station open through takeover
NSW is usually an importer of electricity – interesting that generation for our largest State is propped up by imports from both Qld and Victoria. NSW is an Importer of Electricity – my series of Nemwatch charts annotated with simultaneous demand & price data from AEMO. There will be more data to present on the subject.
The upshot is – Victoria is the Lynchpin State of our grid in terms of electricity generation. Another reason to “Keep Hazelwood open”
Thanks to Chris Gillham – From Perth Region (Western Australia not Scotland) Feb has been moderate so far over there.
PEARCE RAAF (009053) 17° on 9 Feb 2017 smashes the previous 18.8 – data from 1940
BICKLEY (009240) 14° on 9 Feb 2017 annihilated the previous 18 – data from 1994
BADGINGARRA RESEARCH STN (009037) 17° on 9 Feb 2017 also annihilated the previous mild 21 – data from 1965
CUNDERDIN AIRFIELD (010286) 16° on 9 Feb 2017 demolishes the previous 22.2 – data from 1996
Thats all I have time for – there must be a stack more. Watch these stunning cold records get fair coverage in the news media.
Daily maximum temperature anomaly for Australia – this map is for the 8th – The map for the 9th will update later.
South Australia grid sheds load last night. SA heatwave forces blackouts to cope with electricity demand, angering Government 8 Feb 2017. Large version my chart
Can our politicians assure us that closing Hazelwood with generation capacity 1,600MW is in Australia’s interests? Remember Victoria has often been running a surplus of 2,000MW supplying power to three other States, NSW, SA and Tas. We should be asking Govt; “what effect will the Hazelwood shutdown have on power prices?” My 27 Jan post.
AEMO Price & Demand Charts – Average Prices tables – Nemwatch for generation State by State
Brilliant 84 second clip from a very young looking President Bill Clinton talking about immigration in the 1995 State of the Union. Not to be missed.
The BoM blah-blahs on – Every station in the metropolitan area recorded its highest January mean temperature on record and most stations (including Sydney Observatory Hill) also broke records for mean maximum and minimum temperatures.
Not a word on the above BoM page of the ever growing urban heat island driving temperatures hotter for 150 years.
I see Richmond RAAF 67105 had Jan 2017 mean max = 34.1, mean min = 20.
I only have to check historic monthly mean max and min for Richmond – UWS Hawkesbury 67021 to find that 1946 equalled the Jan 2017 max of 34.1 and smashed the min by a whole degree. So obviously all the BoM claims for last month are rendered so pathetically tenous and lineball (without plugging in a “correction for UHI”) – what a disgusting propagandist organization the BoM has become.
Recall my 19 Jan post Tarago fire starts on Capital wind farm – Now the Goulburn Post has “Infigen Energy denies liability for Currandooley fire” The article includes 16 photos in a slide show – number 15 by Mark Dunstone is below – larger version. Other news – Goward pushes for Currandooley coronial inquiry Photo from Goulburn Post. Stop These Things has a post “Wind Power Setting the World on Fire: Infigen Sparks Devastating NSW Bushfire” If anybody has suffered damage there is a comment there from a law firm with an email address.
Above photo is taken from the north – west is to the right and the fire ran east to the left. This map shows the fire outline. and is of course north side up like 99.9% of all maps.
I am puzzled we are not already well aware of elongate clusters of fires along powerlines all across our wide brown land.
