Australias hottest day was at Oodnadatta 62 years ago

50.7 degrees C on 2nd January 1960 www.bom.gov.au/climate/extreme/records.shtml
Australias weather records in general are mostly decades old – says nothing in support of “climate change”
Must drive the BoM mad that with all their new AWS and electric/electronic probes that they can not data-mine a hotter day from somewhere, anywhere and back-up global warming.

  1. This map with locations notable hot days quotes BoM data in Jan 2013. I am yet to find out who made the map. Note Forrest looks way out of place and the Mardie date stamp is 10 years out. I think the map was made by a TV channel that would have been transmitting in Canberra in 2013 – but if anybody knows for sure please say.

  2. Perhaps they don’t need thermometers at all anymore. Take a look at this brown 42 to 45 degree area on the map then your challenge should you choose to accept it is tell me what thermometer recorded that.

At the bottom of that map is “AWAP” which they describe as “the unadjusted AWAP” on page 24 of the PDF here

  3. BoM are sure experts at fitting the heights of their contouring where there is no data. Cook 18110 has no T data after 1998.

  4. Apparently Onslow had a 50.7C on 13th Jan 2022 but it hasn’t been verified as yet. Interestingly Marble Bar was only 47.2C that day. Will be interesting if it gets up.

  5. Amazing I did blog on that –
BoM equal record hot day at Onslow a nothing-burger 14Jan22
I said then [Oodnadatta was from a liquid in glass thermometer in probably an older style large Stevenson screen while Onslow would be from an AWS with a fast reacting electric platinum probe.]
I see on their “Rainfall and temperature records” page the BoM say “Note: All records shown are based on data up to 31 December 2021.” suggesting they may update in January.
The ABC reported Onslow in the Pilbara reaches 50.7C, equalling Australia’s hottest day on record 13Jan22

  6. Yes you did and I thought the same thing. Different thermometers under their rules would mean an ‘adjustment’ as they argue in all other cases. As the ethermometers have a one-second response time, the adjustment should be down. Will await with baited breath for Jan update.
Have you noticed that all mean average temps for Aust from at least 2000 to 2017 have been adjusted up. So 2001 and 2011 are no longer below average mean.

  7. In a sporting contest the first to break and set a new record holds it. So if a record was set in 1878 the newer record needs to beat it. The BoM seem to do it the other way around. The most recent equal record is the one mentioned.
I wonder how many of the supposed records have been equaled in the past a long time prior to the date given as the record holder.
