Prime Minister speaks rubbish says hydro power is cheaper

What is it about Tasmania and the ever-ready pipeline of Commonwealth taxpayers money?
Must be too many Fed. Pollies over there.
Just heard our PM on ABC TVNews24 talking about a second Bass St power cable and Fed. financing for Tassie Hydro’s pumped hydro boondoggle “Battery of the Nation“. Many of the Snowy 2.0 shortcomings will apply in Tassie.
This chart of Monthly AEMO wholesale price shows how Tas prices are weather dependent. And both Tassie and Snowy hydros have the brains to sell their power into PEAK TIMES – see OpenNem. So unless we are enjoying months of flooding rains we are unlikely to see cheap hydro power. This month now the worst of the January heat waves have passed – mainland States prices have retreated to ~$100 but Tas prices are way higher than other States. Prime Minister please take Note!! For larger chart
Hydro installed capacities in NSW, Vic and Tas are so small – hydro can only ever be a bit player on our Eastern Grid.

Record AEMO electricity prices in January 2019

We have been hearing through 2018 how the Fed. Govt. will do this or that to lower electricity prices.
Well despite that blabber all states prices moved higher into summer. Yet the worst of Jan. heat spells were short in the worst affected states and despite everybody knowing exactly when summer was due – records were broken.
Vic and SA had their highest monthly price for 6 years. Tas saw their highest price outside the 2015-16 Basslink failure. NSW had their highest price since the Feb 2017 heat spike which cracked $178. Only Qld averaged under $100(93.91) For large version chart.

Open NEM now has charts of grid generation from 2005

Credit where due to the people behind Open Nem. Now 15 years of electricity generation history by each state from the north. Most of my comments are from viewing with settings at “All” and “Month” but it is easy to checked other periods. AEMO dashboard.

Qld shows increasing demand over the entire period. At the end of 2014 coal starts increasing at the expense of gas. Solar has increased steadily from 2011.

NSW shows a decline in demand 2008-2013. Solar and wind have increased steadily from 2011. Gas looks to be decreasing over 5 years or so.

Exports fell and imports increased after Hazelwood closed in Autumn 2017. WindGen has increased from ~2009. Solar has increased steadily from 2011.

SA demand has reduced since 2010. WindGen has increased since commencing 2007. Solar has increased steadily from 2011. The closure of coal in 2016 marked an increase in imports and GasGen. Then when Hazelwood closed in Autumn 2017 imports fell and SA GasGen increased further. The Battery is between Wind & Gas.

Tas demand jumped in 2009 with the increase provided for mainly by GasGen. Demand has increased slightly since 2009. WindGen commenced in 2009 and the peak year was 2016. Solar is very minor but increasing. Increased exports taking advantage of the carbon tax shows clearly. The ending of GasGen in mid-2014 shows clearly. The Dec-2015 to mid-2016 Basslink outage stands out as does the GasGen brought back into service then with minor distillate use for the portable gensets. In winter last year rainfall allowed a surge of exports.

Adelaide – Melbourne hot days pressure power prices

Thanks to Siliggy for the heads up. AEMO has both South Australia and Victoria with “Scheduled Demand” prices for todays afternoon peak plus $10,000 MWh. Something to watch as the afternoon turns to evening – surely those sky-high prices will moderate as bids come in. OpenNem for SA and Vic shows clearly that yesterdays heat upped demand and wind power fades away exactly when needed across the peak. As a curiosity Tasmania was exporting through BassLink at max during the peak but at very low uneconomic prices from 1730hrs to 2000hrs. We need a Royal Commission into the Electricity Grid to force information and explanations public.

Dr Hewson campaigns in Wentworth byelection

It is a shame that when Dr Hewson campaigns in the Wentworth byelection he is not asked some hard questions about the viability of solar thermal electricity generation schemes has has promoted over the years. He should also be asked about ARENA who found that concentrated solar thermal (CST) technology could be a commercially viable form of dispatchable renewable energy within a decade. English translation – NOT VIABLE NOW. Dr Hewson and Solastor have for years promoted aq model where tracking mirrors concentrate the suns rays on a graphite block generating steam to drive turbines – but despite over a decade of trials and pilot projects in Cooma and Lake Cargelligo I am not aware this system is working continuously anywhere delivering grid electricity economically? Solastor has no news for 2018 which suggests they realize their models are a fail. Vast Solar Pty Ltd(Dr Hewson has no connection I am aware of) have their long gestating solar thermal plant near Forbes that heats molten sodium but that has been sidelined in favour of a simple solar PV development. ARENA is not supporting any Port Augusta projects I can find and ditto for the Clean Energy Finance Corporation. I am keen to hear of any Govt support for concentrated solar thermal projects anywhere in Australia.

Restricted NSW coal generation & electricity spot price boom

Something for our new Energy Minister to get his brains trust working on. Large version chart

Daily prices from AEMO – In mid June I posted – NSW coal electricity generation strike ends
OpenNem NSW has over 10,000MW installed coal generation yet for example on Friday 31Aug18 peak hour coal gen. barely made 6,000MW while imports were ~2,550MW with price spiking to $235. Where was the other 4,000MW of coal gen.? Dear Minister, Please do what you can to kick some life into all the installed NSW coal generators, thanks, Ozzie voters. Just found this in SMH confirming there were meeting between Feds & States re NEG before and after and on Monday 20 Aug then PM was deposed on Friday 24th

Few facts in a sea of lies re NEG debate

This chart from a year ago demonstrates the realities of Australian electricity prices, higher than nations that have the greatest renewables component to their generation. Keep those facts in mind when GreenLabor politicians rave on about “renewables reducing prices”. Chart is from the AFR.

Another fact is AGL full year profit almost trebles on higher electricity prices – and Govt has done next to zero to prevent powerful players gaming the system. It includes several energetic ingredients similar as to the viagra soft. The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), created by Ed Diener, has been one of the more applicable measurement tests of life satisfaction. 50mg sildenafil generic viagra brand 100mg She specializes in relationship and family counseling with more than 15years experience in different settings. Drug-induced impotence: It also happens that the trouble with vision typically sildenafil canada reported by male users are mere results of the aging process. I can not see a NEG that is approved by GreenLabor States doing that much to reverse the explosion in prices. I expect coal fired generation to be neglected and underused adding to the effect of future closures but no clear information will be public about this. AEMOOpenNemNemwatch

Frydenberg yakks micro power price cuts exactly as wholesale prices boom

Yesterday Minister Frydenberg was on ABC news24 TV and 2GB radio spruiking minor power bill reductions but he seems to be unaware that AEMO wholesale prices have been booming for a few weeks – and in the big coal burning States.
These were the wholesale prices over the week around the 5th when he was talking twaddle to media.

The Fed Govt does not have a clue. Need Royal Commission run by electrical engineers.
