Adelaide power price booms as interconnector fails

“At 1114 hrs(26Apr18) the South East Substation to Tailem Bend Substation No.1 275 kV Line and the South East Substation No.1 SVC tripped.” See AEMO Market Notice 62496. About 400MW was lost and lasted till about 1530 hrs, gas increased from 46% to 61%. Shown well on OpenNEM for SA. Put your specs on to see the mini-micro contribution of the famous battery. Notice they fired up some diesels too. The SA average price for the day zoomed to $405.20 but the 30min intervals went into several $thousands and 5min intervals over $10K. Interesting the prices surges in Tasmania on 24th and ANZAC Day – I see too BassLink is still broke, been out for 5 weeks. Ah “The Battery of The Nation!!” So much idiocy around our electricity policy.

  1. In situations like that above, the entire grid hangs by a thread.
Another substantial circuit trip and its serious blackout time.
Meanwhile the public are kept in blissful ignorance whilst our politician / engineers continue to develop an even more unstable electricity supply.
Prices may push consumers to rooftop solar but it will be blackouts that finally convince everybody just how badly governments have let us down.

  2. Just noticed signs of another Heywood link fail – on the 27th at around 1900.
Also – notice the numerous mini-micro battery discharges Blue – just above the Purple imports.
    Perspective for ya.

Thanks. Lucky I’ve got new specs, almost needed a microscope. How much did that nonsense battery cost?

The chart on the output of the big coal-fired stations (nemlog.com.au/nem/stn/LIDDELL:LOY:MILL/) shows how they pump out a steady, and huge, supply, for days or weeks on end. This is essential to their efficiency. Throw in chaotic wind and solar power, and give them preference, and you wreck the stability of the whole system.

How times change. Thirty years ago we left electricity to the engineers and were furious if they ever mucked it up. Then renewables religion took hold and everyone conned themselves into thinking electricity supply could be run as a virtue-signalling contest. And they are still convinced – even though with a few clicks they can follow the disaster of renewables unfolding, practically in real time.
