Weather station urban heating realities

Anthony Watts of northern California has just posted some very informative photographs of weather recording stations in his region north of San Francisco showing the temperature sensors placed near local heat sources. (ClimateAudit has a new post too introducing Anthony’s work.)

In 2001 I put up a page on what the various temperature data told for the Los Angeles grid cell.

More recently a paper in 2005 found that both the LA grid cell (30-35N, 115-120W) and San Francisco grid cell (35-40N, 120-125W) where Anthony’s stations locate, both have greatly varying trends 1976-2003 according to whether you believe Jones et al/CRU data or the GHCN data. See my post Is this 2005 paper by leading IPCC climate scientists, deceptive ? which links to my new map showing that in 57% of global grid boxes, CRU and GHCN vary by more than 1 degree per century.

Checking up to date trends in these two grid cells for various global datsets in the KNMI Climate Explorer and working in Monthly Observations, we can compare trends for CRUT3, GHCN/CAMS, HadSST2, Reynolds SST and the Spencer and Christy MSU.

Remember, disregard the 2007 tic, the time spans all vary and graphic labels are at the top.

    Warick,

In the CRUT3 the data is anomalies. I take it anomilies from the 1961-90 period. Question, where can one get the actual values for the 1961-90 period

  • One of the mysteries of life Steve. You could try asking the guy who runs ClimateExplorer.
    See www.knmi.nl/~oldenbor/
Readers taking the link to ClimateAudit to see Anthony Watt’s new article www.climateaudit.org/?p=1616 should not miss the photos of the Tahoe City instruments alongside an incinerator.

    Warwick,
I’m guessing it is closely held for a reason. But I will ask him. Did you determine if Marysville was in CRUT3? Do you have a list for CRUT3?
Anyways, I’ve ben following Anthony’s work, since I’m familiar with all of the areas he is visiting. Thanks for your help!

  • The Hadley Centre people should give you those 1961-90 numbers you want. As for the station list for CRUT3, Prof Jones and Hadley Centre are not saying so far. Marysville is not in Jones 1994 and earlier gridded data.

    well, I found this.

    A file called absolute.

    Purports to be 61-90 average.
