History of the NEM

OpenNem data now over 14 years (select All & Month – the Sine Wave links to States) salient points State by State.
NSW – demand has fallen since the GFC – always a big importer – exports are minor – solar and wind increasing over last ~5 years.
Qld – demand has risen since the GFC – always an exporter – imports are minor – solar increasing over last ~5 years – wind and hydro minor – big increase in gas 2010 to 2014 then gas tails off somewhat.
Vic – demand has fallen since the GFC – mostly a minor importer – exports mostly grew till early 2017 when Hazelwood closed leaving exports weak – solar and wind increasing over last ~7 years.
SA – demand near constant since GFC – imports increased as coal withered and gas decreased in runup to coal ending – exports mostly weak but increased after early 2017(Hazelwood closed) – solar and wind increasing over last ~11 years.
Tas – demand near constant since GFC – imports dominate over exports – exports increased 2010-2014 due to cashing in on the carbon tax – imports at an all-time peak just before Basslink broke Dec 2015 – gas & diesel held the fort until Basslink was repaired mid 2016 – export surge winter spring 2018 due wet spell – wind increasing over last ~9 years, solar minor. Curiously in view of the dominance of hydro Tas AEMO wholesale prices are up there with SA and Vic the highest price states so far in 2019.

ABC can not mention rain

Just saw this on ABC TVNews24 discussing carbon farming and they mentioned Longreach which has had ~twice average March rain which the TV program never mentioned. This www article mentions Thargominda – Indigenous group looks to carbon farming to regenerate the outback 1Apr19 also not a word about big Feb- Mar rain over ~90% of the State. Easy to click “earlier” and go back to Feb.

Central planning for widdle Australia 2050

I downloaded their “Summary brochure (PDF, 354 KB)” – So they say – “By 2050, international demand for Australia’s natural resources may have fallen”. That sounds like a winner – anybody can see that nobody will want mineral resources anymore.
And “..agricultural trade is likely to have fallen because of climate-related downturns in production.” Courageous predictions against historic trends.
I wish these mainly on the public purse crystal ball gazers would read some history and learn that we did a huge experiment into central planning last century and it was called the USSR. Record AEMO electricity prices in January 2019

We have been hearing through 2018 how the Fed. Govt. will do this or that to lower electricity prices.
Well despite that blabber all states prices moved higher into summer. Yet the worst of Jan. heat spells were short in the worst affected states and despite everybody knowing exactly when summer was due – records were broken.
Vic and SA had their highest monthly price for 6 years. Tas saw their highest price outside the 2015-16 Basslink failure. NSW had their highest price since the Feb 2017 heat spike which cracked $178. Only Qld averaged under $100(93.91) For large version chart.

Open NEM now has charts of grid generation from 2005

Credit where due to the people behind Open Nem. Now 15 years of electricity generation history by each state from the north. Most of my comments are from viewing with settings at “All” and “Month” but it is easy to checked other periods. AEMO dashboard.

Qld shows increasing demand over the entire period. At the end of 2014 coal starts increasing at the expense of gas. Solar has increased steadily from 2011.

NSW shows a decline in demand 2008-2013. Solar and wind have increased steadily from 2011. Gas looks to be decreasing over 5 years or so.

Exports fell and imports increased after Hazelwood closed in Autumn 2017. WindGen has increased from ~2009. Solar has increased steadily from 2011.

SA demand has reduced since 2010. WindGen has increased since commencing 2007. Solar has increased steadily from 2011. The closure of coal in 2016 marked an increase in imports and GasGen. Then when Hazelwood closed in Autumn 2017 imports fell and SA GasGen increased further. The Battery is between Wind & Gas.

Tas demand jumped in 2009 with the increase provided for mainly by GasGen. Demand has increased slightly since 2009. WindGen commenced in 2009 and the peak year was 2016. Solar is very minor but increasing. Increased exports taking advantage of the carbon tax shows clearly. The ending of GasGen in mid-2014 shows clearly. The Dec-2015 to mid-2016 Basslink outage stands out as does the GasGen brought back into service then with minor distillate use for the portable gensets. In winter last year rainfall allowed a surge of exports.

Australian PM Morrison open to lifting nuclear power ban

PM Morrison would consider lifting nuclear power ban
But his Govt is very much a lame duck – so there is little chance they could do anything before the inevitable Labor Govt. Just imagine if they decided to site a nuc power station on Commonwealth land at Jervis Bay. Cue NIMBY and Greens hysteria.

Greenpeace spruiks “Great Southern Reef” to oppose oil exploration

The ABC reports Great Australian Bight the site of nation’s other great reef, where oil companies want to drill. I am suggesting that there is no such feature as the “Great Southern Reef” which is simply a GreenLeft invention to boost the campaign against oil exploration in the Great Australian Bight.
The ABC article starts [Anchored in calm blue waters off Wedge Island Nature Reserve in the Great Australian Bight]. Facts are Wedge island is firmly at the entrance to Spencer Gulf but I guess it is more glam for the ABC/Greenpeace anti-oil drilling campaign to claim they are in the Great Australian Bight.
IMHO Australia should permit petroleum exploration by well qualified participants pretty much anywhere in our economic zone under our normally stringent conditions.

Adelaide – Melbourne hot days pressure power prices

Thanks to Siliggy for the heads up. AEMO has both South Australia and Victoria with “Scheduled Demand” prices for todays afternoon peak plus $10,000 MWh. Something to watch as the afternoon turns to evening – surely those sky-high prices will moderate as bids come in. OpenNem for SA and Vic shows clearly that yesterdays heat upped demand and wind power fades away exactly when needed across the peak. As a curiosity Tasmania was exporting through BassLink at max during the peak but at very low uneconomic prices from 1730hrs to 2000hrs. We need a Royal Commission into the Electricity Grid to force information and explanations public.

Restricted NSW coal generation & electricity spot price boom

Something for our new Energy Minister to get his brains trust working on. Large version chart

Daily prices from AEMO – In mid June I posted – NSW coal electricity generation strike ends
OpenNem NSW has over 10,000MW installed coal generation yet for example on Friday 31Aug18 peak hour coal gen. barely made 6,000MW while imports were ~2,550MW with price spiking to $235. Where was the other 4,000MW of coal gen.? Dear Minister, Please do what you can to kick some life into all the installed NSW coal generators, thanks, Ozzie voters. Just found this in SMH confirming there were meeting between Feds & States re NEG before and after and on Monday 20 Aug then PM was deposed on Friday 24th
