  1. I think you can say BOM is wrong about 50% of the time as they do not look out of the window, appear to take no notice of the weather occurring to the west, and are focused on looking at the output from their super computer on a climate model that has been shown to fail most of the time.
BOM got yesterday wrong. They said it would be hot but it rained (11mm). They predicted for today even hotter (around 35C) than their off prediction for yesterday with a chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon. It has been a lovely day around 28C max. with a lovely clear sky as the sun is getting low

  2. Yep

Where I live in western NSW the larger reptiles( Big Goannas & snakes larger than 0.5m) are still not out. By my estimation that is around 6 week later than usual.

For the record I am out walking the scrub & driving the highways 6 days out of 7.

The food chain below them had a bumper winter too.

  3. According to the BoM, Spring 2016 was right on normal temp wise.
‘Overall, mean temperatures for Australia were equal to the long term average for spring, with an anomaly of 0.00 °C. Mean minimum temperatures were slightly above average (+0.05 °C) and mean maximum temperatures slightly below average (anomaly of −0.05 °C).’

  4. Elders weather shows a -0.7C temperature anomaly for Perth in November. Yet the BoM November map you show has Perth with a +ve November temperature anomaly. I believe Elders uses actual measured temperatures. While the BoM map uses model manipulated temperatures.

    * You can locate Perth on the WA coast as the CBD is at the same latitude as Rottnest Island

  5. Gidday Philip – I took a quick look at the various sources for the basic Perth Metro stats
    As you say Elders use 26.5 & 14.3 for the av max & min 1993-2014 – 2016 = 27.7 & 13.6
    AWN use 26.4 & 14.2 for the “norm” – 2016 ditto = 27.7 & 13.6
    www.australianweathernews.com/data/DS1109.HTM
BoM use 26.6 & 14.3 for the “mean” thats from –
    www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_009225_All.shtml
    and for 2016 have 27.7 & 13.6 as at
    www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/201611/html/IDCJDW6111.201611.shtml

When you look at CDO you find readings commenced in Nov 1993.
    www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/
Using the “average” function in Excel I agree with Elders 26.5 & 14.3 for the av max & min but went the extra year to 2015.
Getting the mean from this site – and using all years 1993-2015
    www.calculatorsoup.com/calculators/statistics/mean-median-mode.php
I get 14.347826086957 for the mean min.
and 26.547826086957 for the mean max.
They round off to agree with Elders averages.

Here is a little Table summing the above – and the Perth mean anomaly is much lower than the 1 to 2 degrees indicated on the anomaly map.

Like you Philip I do not know how BoM rack the Perth region up to 1 degree plus.

BoM comments on the anomaly maps – they ref to “The air temperature analyses and associated maps use data contained in the Bureau of Meteorology climate database, the Australian Data Archive for Meteorology (ADAM).”
    www.bom.gov.au/climate/austmaps/about-temp-maps.shtml
I do not know if ADAM is public.

  6. See the BoM has a page out for WA in November “Western Australia in November 2016: Hot in the far north; dry in the south”
Eyre saw a record cool night for the State in November. Eyre recorded a minimum of -2.1 °C on the 14th, which was a new State record for WA, replacing the previous WA record in November of -2.0 °C at Eyre on 9 November 1999. Cue headlines and TV news of course.

  7. Thanks Warwick. I had a bit of a brain fade and was looking at minimum temperatures and thinking they were average (mean) temperatures. My mistake.
