3rd August 2014 saw record cold mornings in Hay, Hillston and Lake Victoria – in New South Wales that is

While roughing it in a motel in the wilds of central NSW I heard the ABC weather lady say that Adelaide was enjoying a record cold August morning – a record since 1888 I think.
Yesterday was a pretty hard frost here so I have quickly checked a few records and it looks to me as though Hay, Hillston and Lake Victoria have had record cold mornings. Can anybody add to this list ? Or have additional info re Adelaide – South Australian cold.
It will be easier to check when the Sunday contoured map of minimum anomalies comes available.
Hay – yesterday -3.8 prev coldest -2.5 on 2 Aug 1997
Hillston yesterday -4.6 prev cold -3.3 on 7 Aug 1963
Lake Victoria yesterday -2.5 prev cold -1.4 on 16 Aug 1967
I just checked Google which finds no news on this – what would we hear if it was a record hot day?

  1. Record minimum for Adelaide west terrace which is now closed is 0.9 deg c 7th August 1888

that record (0.9 degC)was equalled on the 4th August 2014 at new Kent town station which smashed that station record since 1977 which was 1.6 deg C since 1994..WOW

Thanks for your update Warwick. Good someone sees this as news worthy!!

  2. Here is the minimum anomaly map for Sunday 3rd August 2014

    – peak cold anomaly in South Australia north of Renmark. Apart from Yunta which only has data from 1998 – are there any stations with record cold on the 3rd?

  3. Yes
    Renmark – -5.2C compared to -1.0C (2 Aug 99/ records back to 1957)
+ Port Augusta and Hawker seem to have their lowest minimums.

  4. so because there was a few cold days in one location in the world, the science of climate change is therefore complete crap eh?

  5. Some more cold minimums today. Livinia has been mentioning the records. but not the run of them
Mildura has equalled or broken the min record over the past 4 days

The news said the coldest minimum in 20 yrs

  6. The magnitude of this cold event is seen clearly here

For those who are expecting global cooling/cyclic downturn.. This data is encouraging
This downturn should continue until at least 2030 and some cycle researchers even suggest the next 100 yrs
The global warming cycle will never get any higher in the next 30 yrs for sure.
Less crops means less food and higher prices as the years kick on

  7. Anthony Watts reports a record low max in Death Valley beating the previous record by an astonishing 15F.

Also, snowstorms in southern Urals cities in mid-July, the first in 100 years.

And George Bailey’s Super El Nino prediction was a complete bust, and per usual, all the models were wrong.

Finally, note in Warwick’s graphic the East and West were cold at the same time. A fairly rare occurence in winter.

  8. Livinia on weather news said Adelaide had a record string of cold minima for August.
Can’t find this in the Adelaide news?… Nothing on weatherzone news?
Smog is apparently very bad in Sydney with this strong inversion.
The forecast is for the high pressure belt to remain strong 1032-1035 hpa for the remainder of the week. So could be more to talk about here.

  9. Does the -7C for Canberra I heard on last night’s ABC news count? Oh, just noted Weathercycles note above. Anyway plenty of evidence of cold. However, the ABC and SBS are still promoting an El Nino and drought to cover the news about cold.
