Upper Hunter byelection today

Morning TV news shows the extent to which our media is green/left dominated. The Premier spun her way through a few statements, pointing out the usual anti-Gov swing at byelections – saying she was returning to Sydney before evening. The assembled media made not one attempt at a probing question of this “greenleft credentialed Premier” – not that was shown on ABC TV news. Amazing in view she was asking voters to support her Gov – yet many voters depended for jobs & prosperity on coal mining which her Gov is trying to close down to reduce emissions, while replacing coal fired electricity by renewables.
Late in 2020 her Energy Minister Matt Keane unveiled his radical plan to achieve that. Then in late March the Premier and her Gov including her Nationals Deputy Premier Barilaro, NSW Energy Minister Matt Kean, all agreed to appoint Malcolm Turnbull chair of the “NSW Net-Zero Emissions and Clean Economy Board”. Sadly for them the Nationals MP Michael Johnsen had to resign at the end of March and the byelection clock started ticking resulting in the rapid firing of Mr Turnbull before he had a chance to warm the seat @ the “NSW Net-Zero Emissions and Clean Economy Board”. You could not make this up. We can only hope that Upper Hunter voters see through the lies, bulldust and renewables propaganda and vote their hip pockets.

Tallawarra B replacing Liddell with nothing-burger

Coal fired Liddell was 2,000MW and Tallawarra B is a 300MW OCGT unit gas “peaking” power plant on the western side of the suburban Lake Illawarra in southern Wollongong. Australia’s first green hydrogen and gas power plant. by Deputy Premier Barilaro 3May21 The hydrogen seems to be just a wish from the Chinese owned Energy Australia to find some future hydrogen fuel from 2025 if they can.
The Hon Angus Taylor MP Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction says “Tallawarra B power station to be built”.
All the above has to be seen in light of –
[1] Increasing revelations of the Green stance of the Premier over last 6 to 9 months.
[2] The surprisingly Green future plans revealed late in 2020 by Energy Minister Matt Keane as NSW pursues a net zero target by 2050.
[3] The appointment of Malcolm Turnbull as some sort of Energy Czar under Minister Keane – an appointment that was quickly reversed after the Upper Hunter byelection(voting is 22nd May) was announced.
[4] NSW has for years been too often an importer of electricity from Queensland.
[5] Note the Deputy Premiers media release say near the end “Jointly underwriting the Queensland-NSW transmission interconnector upgrade with the Commonwealth Government.” Why would taxpayers funds be wasted on this when NSW should generate its own electricity. And we have the Queensland Premier saying in 2020; “NSW has their own hospitals – Queensland hospitals are for Queensland people”.
[6] Closing Liddell and adding Tallawarra B will add stress to NSW gas supplies which have failed power plants in recent years plus NSW has gas exploration bans and the much ballyhooed Narrabri gas proved up by Santos is subject to unrelenting lawfare on many fronts including the pipeline connection to NSW grid.
IMHO NSW needs to strengthen its own capacity to generate 24/7 dispatchable electricity.

South Australianisation of NSW electricity

Today there was much political beat-up on TV news over a small 190MW QNI upgrade (an interconnector to Qld) costing ~$102Mill. Prime Minister Scott Morrison and NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian with other Ministers in attendance talked about “…putting downward pressure on wholesale prices..”. The purest fantasies you will hear. AEMO has a Generation Information page where you can download Excel files setting out State by State installed capacity also showing new projects for a few years ahead. OpenNem has useful generation presentations.
Here is a Table showing changes to generation out to 2023. Continue reading South Australianisation of NSW electricity

Basslink out till October

Basslink failed last Saturday 24 Aug19 at 11am – was said to be back online yesterday 27Aug19
now news is “Basslink out until October”.
Our NEM has been wrecked for decades by incompetent politicians –
Our NEM is being run by renewables zealots –
Our NEM will be wrecked for years to come by our incompetent politicians.
AEMO prices whatever you can find.
With Basslink out Tassie Hydro income is down and they will not like that.
Updated chart(large version) added 2Sep19 just to see where we are generally on the NEM with Govt trying to talk down prices.
Chart was last reported 2Feb19
[1] Absolutely clear that for years Vic prices were relatively cheap prior to Hazelwood closing and after that they are in the top of the band.
[2] Also absolutely clear that for 2.5 years Qld prices have been relatively cheap and they enjoy the greatest percentage of coal fired gen.
[3] Also absolutely clear that since Port Augusta coal fired gen. closed over 3 years ago SA prices have seen severe price spikes every summer (and at times blackouts).
[4] It should be clear to Govt that any premature closure of Liddell risks higher NSW prices.

AER takes four wind farms to court

We reported on the South Australian electricity blackout – historic on the day 28Sep16 In comments I wished for “..needs nailing by a skilled questioner with experts under oath in front of media cameras.” Wow in due course we might see that unless the court action is settled first.
Today near three years later Lame Duck Govt bites back at four wind farms through the Australian Energy Regulator. The four wind farms are –
AGL Energy Limited in relation to the Hallett 1 (Hallett), Hallett 2 (Hallett Hill), Hallett 4 (North Brown Hill) and Hallett 5 (The Bluff) Wind Farms
Neoen SA in relation to the Hornsdale Wind Farm
Pacific Hydro Pty Ltd in relation to the Clements Gap Wind Farm
Tilt Renewables Limited in relation to the Snowtown 2 Wind Farm (comprising Snowtown Wind Farm Stage 2 North and Snowtown South Wind Farm).
This AER legal process has been bubbling along quietly for near three years and might explain why AGL has extended the life of Liddell. I see Pacific Hydro is owned by the Chinese State Power Investment Corporation.

Terry McCrann eviscerates renewables – again

ReNu’s solar fantasy crashes and burns
Terry McCrann, Business Columnist, 7:49PM August 2, 2019

Two years ago our — and also “their”, as in “their ABC’s” — Alan Kohler exhorted us to see the future in renewable energy. The poster child of that future nominated by Kohler was, as he put it, a “little company named ReNu Energy”. Continue reading Terry McCrann eviscerates renewables – again

Forbes NSW solar project canned due lack sunshine

You could not make this up! The ABC reports – Solar innovators forced to seek clearer skies than clouded pilot site of Forbes – I have mentioned the Vast Solar This super drug will kill all your worries as there is literally no difference between viagra from canada a branded and a generic ED drug. The drugs specifically target the penile region. It cannot be used by men who take nitrates or alpha-blockers for heart or ronaldgreenwaldmd.com sildenafil in canada blood pressure would be. For more than 17% of men in their twenties can have this problem viagra samples australia for various reasons. site at Jemalong near Forbes a few times over the years. In the middle of a global warming panic and drought can anybody cast light(sorry) on data showing Forbes is lacking its due sunshine?

History of the NEM

OpenNem data now over 14 years (select All & Month – the Sine Wave links to States) salient points State by State.
NSW – demand has fallen since the GFC – always a big importer – exports are minor – solar and wind increasing over last ~5 years.
Qld – demand has risen since the GFC – always an exporter – imports are minor – solar increasing over last ~5 years – wind and hydro minor – big increase in gas 2010 to 2014 then gas tails off somewhat.
Vic – demand has fallen since the GFC – mostly a minor importer – exports mostly grew till early 2017 when Hazelwood closed leaving exports weak – solar and wind increasing over last ~7 years.
SA – demand near constant since GFC – imports increased as coal withered and gas decreased in runup to coal ending – exports mostly weak but increased after early 2017(Hazelwood closed) – solar and wind increasing over last ~11 years.
Tas – demand near constant since GFC – imports dominate over exports – exports increased 2010-2014 due to cashing in on the carbon tax – imports at an all-time peak just before Basslink broke Dec 2015 – gas & diesel held the fort until Basslink was repaired mid 2016 – export surge winter spring 2018 due wet spell – wind increasing over last ~9 years, solar minor. Curiously in view of the dominance of hydro Tas AEMO wholesale prices are up there with SA and Vic the highest price states so far in 2019.

Solar thermal killed again

But will it lie down? The proposed Port Augusta solar thermal power plant is a great example of public ignorance of the laws of physics on a massive scale. How the concept has polluted public energy debate for so long is amazing. I have been drawing attention to Solar Thermal problems for years because that technology obviously butts up against the laws of physics. From 2016 – then ARENA says concentrated solar thermal not viable should have laid projects to rest – the death of solar thermal at Forbes NSW – but Dr Hewson campaigns in Wentworth byelection still spruiking solar thermal. We are about to elect a GreenLeft Fed Govt and solar thermal might ride again.
