Few success stories in “green” companies – despite the help they all get from Govt subsidies

Scanning through the ASX – as I do – I have noticed several companies trying to exploit “green opportunities” usually with the help of massive Govt subsidies – which means their hands are in OUR pockets.

Nice to see many failing – sooner they quietly go bust – the better for our hip pockets.

I say – let investors who have some great idea to make money, use their own funds to build a company to make their fortune.

Governments should have no place subsidising dubious green ideas. If green ideas are commercially sound – investors will beat a path to their door.

Feel free to contribute any other candidates. Note – after posting again on this subject on 7 Feb 2012 and in July 2013 – I have changed these linked Yahoo charts to be 5 yr charts.

Canberra solar electricity schemes bludge off NSW coal fired generators

The GreenLabor ACT government in Canberra (population ~300,000) has announced plans to increase the generation of electricity by various solar methods.
Of course this has the solar “industry” wetting itself at the thought of more govt subsidies. In all this flurry of feel low cost viagra In order to solve problems of these victims and others, there is an effective medicine, which can be helpful to continue enjoying the love life. The maximum concentration though, is decreased with this meal, but the levitra professional online desired effect is achieved by using healing mineral water. However, it does not translate into meaning that you will be fine interacting with other people without any frustrations and viagra uk disappointments. The funny thing is, living in China is probably quite different from living in any other Asian countries. Canberra solar PV gross feed scheme is a foolish and expensive experiment with our electricity system

As reported here and there are many other reports online, The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Labor Govt. with the applause of the ACT Greens, nows pays about 50c/kWh for electricity generated from solar photovoltaic (PV) panels or wind power. This is a GROSS feed in tariff, not NET and is the most generous in Australia. There is also a Federal Govt subsidy ~$8000 to install PV panels, if you qualify.
This compares to typical ACT power charges of say 15c/kWh, which is plenty high enough considering large industrial users can pay half that and coal fired generators can produce power at about 4c.

Wind power fad driven by environmental spin

This article by Mike Nahan of the IPA, in the Opinion section of The West Australian 28 September 2007, says it all.

Two posts of mine touch on shortcomings of wind power.

A similar Govt exaggeration to what we see at Albany is claimed for most England and Wales wind farms, full text copied below. UK article from the Telegraph, Wind farms ‘are failing to generate the predicted amount of electricity’,

Abuse and incompetence in fight against global warming
Up to 20% of carbon savings in doubt as monitoring firms criticised by UN body
A Guardian investigation has found evidence of serious irregularities at the heart of the process the world is relying on to control global warming.

[An earlier post showed the Albany wind farm in southern Western Australia only produces 80% of claimed power, which probably translates into another waste of Federal Govt money. We think it is highly likely that carbon credits associated with wind power in Australia are being claimed more than once. An audit is needed and data should be public.]

Albany Wind Farm underperforms

The Albany Wind Farm (AWF) on the south coast of Western Australia was commissioned in 2001 and at the time there was a blizzard of publicity including TV adverts with a young girl claiming that the facility would supply 75% of electric power for Albany.

I thought this sounded optimistic and emailed Western Power asking if they could supply monthly operating statistics. It took a while to get a reply but in September 2002 a representative of the operating company replied that the information was commercially sensitive and would not be available but that they had experienced less wind than normal in the winter of 2002.
