Compaction has been happening for centuries. There are bricked up entrances to levels in some buildings in Venice now well below the water line which were the ‘ground’ floor when the buildings were built.

Bluntly, the ABC and other lefty meejas have refused to acknowledge that geology/geoscience is actually part of science. This has pertained for years now.
It is not that they are ignorant of it, it is simply that they really dislike the hard evidence geology provides and the pertinent conclusions that such evidence informs. So their answer is to exclude it by default.
