New South Wales motorists should boycott E10

Bid to drive down ethanol petrol prices dealt a blow – Choosing E10 only makes sense if it is significantly cheaper. It is disturbing to read of this lobbying by Ethanol producer Manildra who is a big spending supporter of both sides of politics. Just Google – E10 engine damage – to see why using E10 carries risks.
Best be safe – not worth trying to save a few cents – CarsGuide tested the cost per km of various grades of petrol and concluded – “Based on our results you’re better off sticking with standard unleaded…”.
Email or phone your NSW politicians and tell them you do not want the Govt promoting E10 and pushing up your fuel prices.

  1. Agree, the ethanol addition is not taxed and that is why it is cheaper. I find that the E10 increases fuel consumption of my SUV by about the 2c difference in price but when pulling the caravan or loaded trailer the fuel consumption is much worse and the power is also worse. The only benefit of the E10 is that it helps clean the injectors of my SUV and my wife’s little 1.2 l hatchback to give smoother running. So we use E10 about every 5th fill but never when we expect a big carrying load.
My next SUV (when I can afford it) will be diesel for better economy and better pulling power.

  2. I own two cars, both of which exclusively use Premium 98RON. Even 95RON reduces the power and increases consumption in both engines. Plus the vehicle manufacturers state outright that an ethanol blend will rot the hoses more quickly than Premium, coke the cylinders and reduce the engine life.

Obviously I don’t need LINO Baird increasing my bowser price but as importantly is the principle of fining the retailer for customers’ legitimate choices – Phelps resigned from Cabinet over this issue and stated that Cabinet’s defence was: “We know it is unprincipled, but what else can we do ?”

This incredibly corrupt legislation (the Manildra ethanol supplier has donated to the Libs since Howard started this E10 rubbish) also has the potential to reduce the bowser availability of RON98 as servos replace 98 with E10 to try and reach the 6 in 10 customers required to avoid the fines.

I am really fed up with these soft left fools constantly interfering with my life.

  3. The heat of combustion of ethanol is only 12,000 BTUs / lb. (where-as petrol is up ~ 19,000 BTUs) so it does not look like a high performance fuel.
I add a tiny bit of hydrogen to my diesel 4WD as it is upwards of 60,000 BTU/lb. and permits thorough combustion.
My local petrol injection workshop asked me not to run E10 in my car as they see repeated problems with perished rubbers and aluminium alloy corrosion but I can see that the occasional tank of E10 might make any water in the tank miscible with the petrol.
