Proof WA Water Corporation does not reliably record rain

After a wet weekend 15th-16th October WA Water Corporation recorded rain at only 2 of their 7 Perth dam rain stations on Monday morning the 17th.
You can check the widespread rain around Perth on 15th and 16th of October just click the Perth region on this AWN map and scroll down noting rain on that weekend.
Now the WA Water Corporation records rain 5 days a week at their dams at this page. I have kept many daily screen shots over several months and often the recording of daily rain by Water Corporation bears little resemblance to rain that we know fell in the district on the preceding day. So clearly the proviso at the bottom of their page about “rangers may not collect rainfall readings daily” is very very true.
In the case we are looking at – the widespread rain on 15th-16th Oct – for 5 of the 7 dam rain stations no rain data was collected up to 6 & 7 days later. Obviously with delays taking rain readings factors like evaporation could make readings less useful with every day that passes – but a week!! If they use electric gauges then they are subject to errors too. I do not know what goes on in Water Corporation but it is imperative that all of their daily rain data be made public so anybody can check how their taxes are being spent.

Thursday 20th exactly the same as 19th

  1. Water using taxpayers in WA would not be surprised at the Water Corporations poor rainfall data recording over many years and it must be remembered, since our so called “water crisis” they have been blaming Global Warming/Climate Change for our lack of rainfall, not poor planning and mismanagement on their part.

The reason is quite simple, by creating an artificial water shortage by blaming other forces, they are trying to absolve
themselves of any blame, preferring instead to call the water
crisis an “Act of God” in allowing high CO2 emissions discharge into the atmosphere.

At that time both the Government and Water Corporation put
us all on strict water rationing and asked us to reduce our carbon footprint or suffer the consequences.
They on the other hand installed two of the largest and most expensive, power guzzling, polluting monstrosities known to man.

The blatant hypocrisy is they have recently announced an increase in production of the Kwinana and Binningup desalination plants and if that’s not enough, they intend to build two more of them north of Perth, plus more sewerage treatment and wastewater treatment plants.

On my calculations the capital expenditure will be in excess of $10 billion, together with far greater CO2 emissions, calculated to be in excess of 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 discharge pa. talk about a fox in the hen house.

The bottom line to all this, is the Government and Water Corporation have created an “artificial shortage” of water in this State for the express purpose of their continuing monopoly, which is the largest financial contributor to the State’s purse ie. in 2014 the Water Corporation announced a
$1.0 billion dollar profit and 14 days later, increased water charges by 10%.
No wonder the water using taxpayers are so upset, particularly when there are far cheaper and more environmentally beneficial projects that can deliver 250 GL pa
of water and 75 mw of hydro-electric power.
    GO FIGURE.

  2. October is not yet ended and note that some dams have already exceeded their annual average for the year? I thought a Premier had stated that useful rain had ended in SW WA??
Going by these disparate Water Corporation figures.
    www.watercorporation.com.au/water-supply-and-services/rainfall-and-dams/rainfall/rainfall-at-perth-dams
Canning Dam is only 8mm from = the annual average
Churchmans Brook is 193.6mm over the annual average.
Mundaring Dam is 165.7mm under the annual average.
Serpentine Pipe Head is 55.5mm over the annual average.
South Dandalup Dam is 132.8mm under the annual average.
Victoria Dam is 227.8mm under the annual average.
Wungong Dam is 184mm over the annual average.

Agree they should release their figures, stop preaching about declining rainfall and an audit is obviously required.

  3. In this day and age it is incomprehensible that the Water Corporation keep getting their figures wrong and can’t
maintain an accurate set of rainfall records.

Given we can pick up our mobile phone and ring anywhere in the world in little more than a nanosecond and can transmit volumes of data in similar time, why do the Water Corporation have so much difficulty?

The other obvious question is, why do we let the Water Corporation collect rainfall data in the first place when that function has been carried out in Australia for over 100 years by BOM who I think they are far better equipped as trained meteorologists .

In any event the appropriate State Government agency for this task are the Department of Water, who are after all the statutory water regulatory body in WA .

The Water Corporation, being a water seller and distributor
are substantially conflicted and commercially compromised
    by wearing two conflicting hats.

There is absolutely no technical or financial reason why both
BOM and DOW can’t produce daily rainfall data on the day it occurred and published within 24 hours.

  4. What I find curious is the privately owned Peel dam, 100 km south of Perth, is generally full and overflowed in 2013. While the WC dams were at record lows.

I know the WC manages the dam, but it’s unclear if they manage the catchment, which is where the difference probably lies.
