  1. Indeed politicians are proud of their role in what comes down to political pandering to the environmental lobby in a misguided crusade that has seen the squandering of scarce public funds on wasting scarce water resources, destroying food bowl productivity and sending farmers broke. This travesty had its genesis back in the days when the current PM was Environment Minister, the concept was flawed then just as it is now.

  2. What is even worse is that no matter how much water they put down the Murray, it is incapable of keeping the mouth of the river open. This is because there is a barrage between the river mouth and the two lakes (Alexandrina and Albert) which is designed to keep sea water out of the lakes (they were originally estuarine).

Similarly the two lakes and the barrage ensure that any water flowing down to the mouth is devoid of sufficient force to keep the sand from building up at the mouth. As a consequence this creates a demand by clueless environmentalists that we must keep pouring more and more valuable water down the river to achieve the impossible.

One could hope that some politician who was in some way pragmatic might bring this stupidity and awful waste to an end, but to date none seem to have appeared on our horizons as yet. So, I guess we are condemned to this stupendous exercise in waste for a few years yet.
