  1. Environmentalist always oppose any precautionary burning-off anywhere and they are then surprised when the fire fuel accumulates to the point that there is a major bushfire. It is similar to opposing the building of dams and then being surprised by a sudden shortage of water during the drought.

  2. “A COLAC district environmentalist fears burning off in the Otways is making the forest more fire prone and killing wildlife.”

This woman is on another planet, she is spouting the standard “Conservation Council” propaganda. Pure bovine faeces.

I spent 18 years in fire surveillance and a similar period working in conservation, much of it post fire monitoring. It is fires such as the one currently burning in Victoria that does the environmental damage. Where this fire is burning in high fuel loads it will produce a strong heat pulse into the soil if the soil is dry. This is capable of destroying soil stored seed banks and soil microflora and microfauna.

I have personally documented plants tissue death to a depth of more that 10cm below the soil surface in long unburnt Eucalyptus diversicolour and Eucalyptus jacksonii forest following wildfire following wildfire .

However you can take these retards out into the bush and show them, you can give them the documentation, it makes no difference, the ideology is more important than the clearly demonstrable facts.

These are the same people (or sort of) who insist that the planet is on it’s way to hell in an overheated handbasket, irrespective of the evidence.

  3. TedM……….You are right………from those at Wye who fought the fire, all the evidence is that it was an understory fire, not a crown fire, and that most of the houses were lost because of close proximity to heavy understory….that’s why the ridge between Sep and Wye burnt, but the one above the pub and store did not, much, much less understory so fire couldn’t get a hold.

  4. Thanks Redress: Just to add that a crown fire can only be sustained if there is enough available fuel beneath it. It then depends on the conditions as to whether it becomes a crown fire. This is something that is poorly understood.
