Media spreads fairy story that Caboolture and north Brisbane floods were a once in 2000 year event

More likely a once in two years event. Queensland storm: Five dead in storm called ‘one-in-2000-year event’
I saw this headline – Thats why our homes flooded

Queensland storm: Residents of Deception Bay claim Moreton Bay Rail Link works contributed to homes being flooded
Interesting to read the comments in both articles – most seen realistic.
I was surprised to see on TV news video of quite modern houses built along what became a raging watercourse. Looks like Qld town planners need to learn basics about flood prone areas.

  1. On 6th Feb, 1931 at Narangba Rail w/s, 394mm fell in one day. This was after a fall of 206mm on the 5th. Burpengary, which is not far from Deception Bay, had 442mm after a fall of 217 on the day before.
Don’t they check the facts before they sprout?

  2. Historic records seem to be ignored in the climate change debate but, nevertheless, it’s worth looking at Exceptional Rainfall in 24 Hours collated by Griffith Taylor in his book Australian Meteorology published in 1920 (in turn sourced from Rainfall Observations Made in Queensland, Hunt, 1914) …

    Port Douglas – 31.53″ (800.8mm) 1 April 1911
    Kuranda – 28.30″ (718.8mm) 2 April 1911
    Harvey Creek – 27.75″ (704.9mm) 3 January 1911
    Harvey Creek – 24.72″ (627.9mm) 31 January 1913
    Goondi – 24.10″ (612.1mm) 30 January 1913
    Macnade – 23.33″ (592.6mm) 6 January 1901
    Innisfail – 21.22″ (539mm) 23 December 1903

That suggests the region used to have far more extreme rainfall events which better fit the “once every two years” category.

It’s also worth noting BoM research stating that storm events have declined significantly in Australia’s east coastal region over the past century.

  3. If one looks at the BOM Radar map for Brisbane you will see Crohamhurst -not far from Caboolture and Maleny. The official BOM weather station 40062 is now closed but the following was recorded in 1893 1st Feb 273.8mm, 2nd Feb 509.5, 3rd Feb 907.0 mm 4th Feb 273.3. This was a tropical cyclone called the Mooloolah event which flooded the whole of the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast area.
BOM can not even note their own records.
