Australian Bureau of Meteorology lacking required scientific balance in reporting warmest July for Melbourne – record warmth was confined mainly to inner urban “heat island”

BoM inspired media reports have widely spread the news that July 2013 in Melbourne was the warmest on record – most seem to be quoting daytime or maximum temperatures. here are a few articles –

I recall seeing an article that did mention the ever expanding Melbourne “urban heat island” (UHI). I quick check of July mean max for the following outer Melbourne weather stations indicates that outside the centre of Melbourne July in 1975 was warmer than July 2013. The record July 2013 warmth seems confined to the Melbourne UHI. Checking BoM data histories here and getting July 2013 data from here, select your station then follow the “Recents Months at…” links

  1. Surely any balanced media release from the BoM should have recognized the restricted and man-driven nature of their Melbourne claim.

That’s why they don’t issue balanced media releases!

Most people still don’t understand how central the inclusion of the urban heat island (UHI) effect is to the whole global warming tale. First it gives rise to these endless stories of “hottest ever” conditions. But they’re just for the average Joe who can be fooled into thinking that local heat “proves” global warming. More seriously, the UHI also biases the most advanced research into the sensitivity of climate to CO2. Recently, IPCC principals admitted that doubling CO2 would only cause 2 degrees warming instead of 3. But their calculations were all based on the HADCRUT4 database, which includes plenty of UHI effects. The revised estimate is therefore still too high.

  2. Perth records don’t mean much as the recording site has been moved several times. Most recently in 1992 (I think) from the CBD, opposite a large irrigated park, which would have kept down night time temperatures, to Mt Lawley.

  3. Melbourne – Isn’t that where David Jones hangs out. “John McTernan” of AGW in Australia.
