NZ NIWA rain Outlook huge fail

The Canterbury region has just been flooded with a “one-in-100-year event” – yet the NIWA Outlook was for “below average rain”.
Should be mass sackings over the ditch. I see MetService has a message –[Cumulative Rainfall Map Unavailable – Unfortunately the cumulative rainfall maps have not captured the recent heavy rainfall accurately and have been disabled while we investigate. The maps will be restored once resolved.]

NZ would be better served if the Gov just paid BoM to “tack on Aotearoa”. The BoM www site is light years more useful for understanding weather.

“NSW might bring forward Dungowan Dam” Deputy PM

I heard our Australian Dep PM Michael McCormack discussing the Budget infrastructure spend say on TV News “NSW might bring forward Dungowan Dam”.
What th’ – on 14Oct2019 back in “the drought” Prime Minister Morrison and NSW Premier announced Canberra would give NSW a $Billion for dams including the new Dungowan. See links in my 27Sep20 blog ScoMo $Bill on NSW dams where I noted that nothing was happening except EIS prepping and “community consultation”. Also the Tamworth Regional Council water supplies page has nothing I saw about a new Dungowan Dam. NSW Energy policy from late 2020 has unmasked the increasingly Green policies in NSW and maybe Deputy PM McCormack is correct in implying the proposed Dungowan Dam is on some sort of deliberate holding pattern. In February the Productivity Commission released a draft report “National Water Reform”. This pointed out arguments against a new Dungowan Dam based on “costs of buying water” issues. The “National Water Reform” draft also reveals on page 183/184 of 229 in “Box 13.1 Flawed decision making for Dungowan Dam” – quote [In 2016, the New South Wales and Australian Governments committed a total of $150 million to the construction of Dungowan Dam on the Peel River (ANZIP 2020).] So now the cost has blown out to ~$500Mill yet here we are 5 years on from 2016 – it has rained again and NSW Water Dept are still doing [EIS prepping and “community consultation”].
IMHO just more evidence Australia has lost its way.

BoM rainfall maps NSW north coast floods

I thought it was interesting in view of the NSW north coast floods in the headlines lately to compare the current month Rainfall percentages map to a few other months of notable rainfall. Readers can very easily change the BoM map specs to view other months or parameters. I used the Kempsey (Wide Street) 59017 monthly rainfall data as a guide and made maps for – Feb 1929 which showed a larger area plus 400% on the NSW North Coast. June 1967 showed a much larger area as did June 1950. There would be many more flood events but these caught my eye. Many people in various parts levitra 10 mg www.dentech.co/ of the world at this time are suffering from erectile dysfunction. It helps to gain fuller and stronger erection and maintain love for a viagra sale in india long time. buy generic viagra The only hitch is that the man has to indulge in sexual activity. But, a man may also suffer from the lack of ability to develop or on line levitra else maintain an erection of penis arise when a man sexual get encouraged. If any readers can obtain current month outflows to sea data for the NSW North Coast – and or historic monthly flows to sea data please pass on. For the Sydney region Nov 1961 is mentioned as the worst flood in living memory. June 1950, Feb 1956 and Apr 1988 maps are worth a look. June 1867 is reported as the worst ever – way higher than this month – and looking at monthly rain data I see Parramatta 66046 records over 500mm in May 1889 and March 1892 – too early for maps.
It does seem out of touch that in this day and age we still have so many Sydney houses flood prone.

“Choice” concerned about water efficiency labelling

I got this email from the consumer organization Choice. ( Do you look at water rating labels when buying a new dishwasher, washing machine or shower head?
Australia’s water efficiency labelling scheme requires many products to include a ‘water rating’ sticker that shows how efficiently they use water. The system is currently being reviewed by the government, so this is a crucial opportunity to keep companies honest and make it easier for you to choose water-efficient appliances.
I want the government to hear directly from consumers who use the scheme, so I’ve put this quick survey together to help shape what we ask the government to improve. Warwick, will you take a moment to share your thoughts?
Together, we can make sure Australia’s water efficiency labelling scheme remains an important tool to keep water-wasting products off the market. Share your thoughts to help improve the scheme now. Thanks for your support,)

My thoughts are that we should be considering the “anti-dam” realities of both State and Commonwealth public services and the negative effect of that on water policy and consumers. The failure over 30 years to augment major municipal water supply dams and the ludicrous squandering of $20Bn on unwanted seawater desalination has been an ongoing multi-Gov disaster.

Academics think brackish water harming dolphins

Dolphins (like whales) ancestors originally evolved from land animals around the Eocene around 50million years ago the Eocene was considerable warmer than present times see 65 Myr Climate Change chart. Both charts are from Wiki.

Dolphins in the modern form are known in the fossil record from over 12 million years ago and have survived periods warmer than now plus multiple ice ages with attendant sudden climate shifts we could not imagine.

The ABC has this article – Burrunan dolphin deaths linked to Fresh Water Skin Disease caused by climate change – I marvel at the “scientific” conclusions behind this article. One thing certain is that a population as small as numbers quoted is at risk of dying out regardless of changes in rainfall.

BoM introduces new rainfall maps

Lance gave me the heads up – BoM says at the old AWAP rain maps page – [Please visit the new Rainfall maps page and update your links.
The Bureau of Meteorology has upgraded its monthly gridded rainfall analysis. The enhanced analysis known as Australian Gridded Climate Data (AGCD) employs improvements in statistical modelling and scientific techniques.
The new page also includes the daily data and the previously separate rainfall archive and RMSE pages.] Here is the Old AWAP map for calendar 2019 – and here is the new AGCD map for calendar 2019 – I am surprised at the differences. Hoping readers search around various periods and post any interesting differences.

ScoMo $Bill on NSW dams

It is near a year since the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Premier of New South Wales, Deputy Premier of New South Wales announced their “Billion-dollar investment in NSW dams”. The two big items are a new larger Dungowan Dam to provide water for Tamworth and raising the wall of the Wyangla Dam by 10m.
I am just wondering if shovels will hit the ground at either project before 12 months passes since the big announcement on 13th October last year. Google will find many reports and articles on the above but I am yet to see where shovels have disturbed any soil. Plenty of community consultation and prepping of EIS.

July rain outlook fails many points

As July draws to a close the Australian current month to date rain percentages bear little resemblance to the July rain Outlook.
As our commenter has reported – now August is here we can see the BoM max and min anomaly maps for July and you can compare to the way-way hotter looking 25th June Outlooks for July max and min.

Group stuck at flooded petrol station in Whangarei due wild weather

This happened Friday night before 9.30pm reports the NZ Herald. But as of 8am NSW time Saturday I can not see reports of local rain at Whangarei by the NZ Metservice dot com. Can anybody point me to rain data from Whangarei from pm Saturday? Thanks.

NZ water problems look political

I see this press article from Aotearoa – Calls for Crown intervention as Auckland’s Waikato River water application stagnates Feb2020 – So Auckland’s WaterCare org made an application in 2013 !! to access more Waikato water – and there are still hundreds of other applications in the queue ahead Though cheap viagra is usually meant to treat Sexual Dysfunction in young men.
