Vote NO to referendum to amend the Australian Constitution to recognize local councils

The Gillard GreenLabor Govt is putting up this referendum question re recognising local councils in the constitution – at the same time as the Federal election. Ostensibly because some High Court decision might, note might make it difficult for the Federal Govt to give money to councils. Wow – I am sleepless at night over that.
I notice over at Catallaxy – Another poison pill for Australian federalism, and how to avoid it – marvellous take from Dr Julie Novak
I will be voting NO.
My simple reasons are –
[1] The current system has worked for 110 years – I see no need for change – just not an issue.
[2] The Gillard GreenLabor Govt is arguably the worst Federal Govt in our history – so why trust anything they propose.
[3] They would not be proposing this if it was not beneficial to Labor constituencies in some way – we are suffering five to six years of that – safer to just vote NO.

That being said, online purchases of the medication does involve certain risks. Diabetes mellitus also causes erectile dysfunction by blocking an enzyme known as phosphodiesterase-PDE5, which promotes shorter and softer erections. [4] I am wary of unintended consequences – the instant this becomes law there will be silver-tongued lawyers all over it, not to mention the High Court and nobody knows what new nonsense will start affecting our lives.
[5] Personally I would prefer it if councils cut back on their ever expanding empire building and wasting of our money and were confined more to just fixing roads, collecting rubbish, working hard to reduce rates.
[6] I am not impressed that the coalition are supporting a yes vote, there is a lot wrong with their policies too.
[7] The only important issue at the next Federal election is voting GreenLabor OUT of power.

Looking forward to readers having their say.

Western Australian election confirms trend against the Greens who are looking down the barrel of more losses in upcoming Federal election

Following on from the October 2012 ACT Election where the Greens lost three of four seats – early indications from the Western Australian upper house (Legislative Council) count is that they might have losses there too as the Liberal Govt was returned in a comfortable win, possibly of landslide proportions.
From ABC News – Greens disappointed with election result
It might take several days for WA Legislative Council trends to firm up.
I wonder what might be in store for the Greens at the 2013 Federal Election if the major parties come to their senses and promote the sensible idea to simply “number the Greens last”. I am interested to hear what readers think might be ways the Greens Nationally could try and turn this bad situation around. For example – could Bob Brown return as leader ?

Whereas the Greens are generally accepted as being to the left of Labor. So the Greens peak voting percentages in the years 2008-2011 must include some ex-Democrats who might be unhappy with the Greens performance in the GreenLabor Gillard July 2010-Sep 2013 Federal Government to date.

Particularly from second half 2012 after their long time leader Dr Bob Brown retired – also the Greens could be seen to be obstructing Labor efforts to close our open borders and then last month when the Green Leader Christine Milne accused Labor of “…walking away from its agreement with the Greens and into the arms of the big miners.”
Federal polls have the Greens at around 11%. The chart shows recent weakness in Green numbers in the ACT, WA and to a lesser extent Queensland.

The Carmody Inquiry into the Heiner Affair commences today

The Carmody Inquiry commences its hearings into the Heiner Affair today 3 December 2012 at 10.00am (Australian EST). In February I posted “The Heiner Affair – 20 odd years of Labor and Government cover-up”
This will run on for months I suppose.

Scottish Climate & Energy Forum says – “Commitments under the Kyoto Protocol cease as of 31st December 2012”

Mike Haseler Chairman of Scottish Climate and Energy Forum has emailed me to say –
As a result of finding out that the Kyoto commitments technically comes to an end on the 31st December, the Scottish Climate & Energy Forum have been investigating the likely consequences of this both in terms of what is likely to happen to the protocol and the wide implications when (as it seems) the protocol effectively ends operation on the 31st December.

We have written this up as a report. The main intention of this report has been to try to find the actual facts and having sorted the chaff from the wheat, ascertain what this might mean (with particular emphasis on Scotland).

The report has been produced to coincide with today which is 100 days to Kyoto Ends, and it is available on the SCEF website:

The Australian Broadcasting Corp (ABC) has asked – What do you want to know about Islam?

This blog sometimes goes off-climate-topic.
Following Muslim riots in Sydney last weekend and around the world recently – the ABC asks four questions.
In the wake of the unrest, ABC News Online is putting together an explainer on Islam and the protests.
Tell us the questions you want answered, and we will put them to an expert panel.
We have compiled the following questions to get things started:
1 – What have the recent protests by Muslims in Australia and around the world been about?

Do readers have any experience of “Web of Trust”

I have been told that Web of Trust (WoT) says that my site “…was of low repute!”
Apparently they also warn of Climate Change Dispatch.
Does anybody have any information or opinion on WoT who are based in Finland.
It would not surprise me if Greens on the internet have been putting in bad reports about my site to various internet busybody sites – spam fighters etc.
WoT is new to me – I am interested to hear what readers can tell me.

Great Australian open borders experiment – come on down

Now that the Australian Parliament has failed to enact practical border protection laws – the Nation is in fact operating a huge experiment which will answer the question as to how many Asian people want to migrate here to better themselves. This little graphic sums up how well the John Howard so called “Pacific Solution”

drastically reduced the number of IEVs for the years 2002 to 2008. Then at the end of 2008 the Kevin Rudd Labor Govt relaxed border laws and the results we see now.
Chart of monthly IEV totals up to 30 June.

It is fascinating that since the last boat sinking on the 27th the state owned ABC news service only recorded one IEV arrival early on the 28th. I can not see news items at the ABC site recording the four IEV’s to arrive since then.

Chart demonstrating slow startup for new light bulbs

Thanks to Ed Thurstan for the results of his neat experiment comparing the light up time of the new-fangled fluoro bulbs compared to the perfectly OK old incandescent bulbs that we now can not buy.

As Ed says:

My 75W incandescent bedside lamp bulb finally failed. So I installed a Philips 18W “Ambiance” fluoro, which is claimed to be equivalent to 100W Incandescent bulb. It emitted a dull glow befitting a mood light in a funeral parlour.

After waiting several minutes for sufficient light to see what I was doing, I set up an experiment with a digital camera to measure the light intensity from the fluoro, and compare it with ancient 60 and 75W incandescent bulbs still working around the house.

I set the camera on a tripod, aimed at a spot illuminated by the lamp. I set the camera to take a shot every 15 seconds, with the aperture and ISO fixed but the shutter speed allowed to vary to maintain a constant exposure.

Then I ran each of the three bulbs through a trial to see how long each took to achieve their maximum intensity from when the lamp was switched on. So the shutter speeds give a direct measure of light intensity.

Finally I normalised the results relative to the maximum intensity of the fluoro being treated as 1.

No Carbon Tax Climate Sceptics forming political party in Canberra

No Carbon Tax Climate Sceptics are wanting ACT residents to become members.

The No Carbon Tax Climate Sceptics is a centrist political party, registered nationally with 800 members Australia wide, and wants to be registered in the ACT for ACT elections by June 30th.

At the next ACT election on 20th October 2012 we will campaign primarily on the issue of the wastage of money by the current ACT government on “green programs” and other ideas that do not clearly benefit the environment, and cost ACT residents money.

We believe these wasted funds should instead be used to provide better ACT services across many areas. If you live in the ACT and would like to become a member we can sign you up for free membership before June 30th and send you monthly newsletters to keep you in touch.
