Just in case you missed this – Explaining electricity markets to dummies

Explaining electricity markets to dummies

In speaking to members of the renewable energy sector about what they think is most important to the government’s review of the Renewable Energy Target there is universal agreement: electricity prices.

Abbott has been elected to a significant extent off the back of public anger about how electricity prices doubled between 2007 and 2013, and he knows it.

Getting rid of the carbon tax is task number one in Abbott delivering for these people (even though its 9% drop in prices is a long way short of a return to 2007 levels).

And for many members of the Coalition and their major supporters the RET is really a mini carbon tax in disguise that should be next for the chopping block. They believe it is driving up electricity prices as well, while undermining Australia’s competitive advantage in cheap and plentiful supplies of fossil fuel energy. OK, the RET might reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but for many of these people climate change just isn’t seen as a legitimate issue.

Being a man is the opportunity of being proud, but having erectile dysfunction is a matter of uncertainty as there is no fixed treatment for the viagra from uk erectile brokenness infection. It may lower the sexual drive, and needs corrective treatment like hormone replacement therapy. A very pleasurable sex experience and a self-confidence boost davidfraymusic.com/project/david-fray-at-royal-festival-hall-with-the-philharmonia-orchestra/ viagra properien are the only side effects you’ll experience from using this product because it interferes with hormones thereby resulting in adverse reactions. As much as cardiovascular health is responsible for ED, so is testosterone and linked hormone levels.

For these people there is a heartfelt desire that the RET is bad for the country; scrapping it for them is not about gaining political advantage. Indeed, they’d be willing to scrap the RET even if it came at a political cost. But they actually think that such is the household anger over electricity price rises, scrapping the RET and the associated cost they believe it places on electricity bills could be a vote winner. This is even though a range of polls suggest 70-90% of the electorate view wind and solar as their most preferred source of new electricity supply.

But those within the renewables sector believe they have a strong political defence. This is that while the RET involves an extra cost to subsidise the development of renewable energy systems, this cost is largely, or even completely, offset by reductions in prices across the overall wholesale electricity market.

…..

When I check the AEMO front page I see that South Australia – the State with highest percentage of installed wind power – has the highest electricity price.

Reply from Canberra re carbon farming questions

Last month I asked Minister Hunt and Senator Birmingham the following –

Dear Minister Hunt and Senator Birmingham,

With reference to this website of the Clean Energy Regulator

I downloaded the csv file Register of Offsets Projects (CSV 86 KB) – and found 117 projects across Australia.

Can you please tell me what Commonwealth money has been expended on these projects to date ? Feel free to break down the amount re the previous Government vs the current Government – or any other breakdown like financial years – if that suits you.

I would also appreciate seeing an itemisation for the States and in the case of NSW I hope to see the amounts spent on individual projects.
Looking forward to seeing how much Commonwealth money is being spent on these carbon offset projects.

The reply just came in from the Senator –

NOAA/NASA SWO sunspot counts drifting up compared to Belgian SIDC RI count

I have noticed this for a year or so – as cycle 24 progresses – if you look at the difference SWO minus RI the trend is drifting higher.

Illustrating on the chart the Sep 2011 RI of 78 corresponds with the SWO number 106.1. While the Nov 2013 RI of 77.6 finds SWO at 125.7.

Hoping to learn the reason why.

Experiment measuring pre-dawn urban air temperature in north Canberra compared to BoM Canberra Airport

Since 9th Feb I have been noting down the simultaneous temperature of pre-dawn air coming in my front door compared to Canberra Airport ~13km away as a crow might fly.

We are not that far from Hall, near farmland to the west and about 100m higher than the airport so in theory we might expect to be 0.64°C cooler. The front door faces east into a suburb and it so happens that most mornings a noticeable breeze comes in the door when opened.

I expected the vagaries of weather would produce a few days when we were cooler than the airport. It turned out that only on one day 16 March were we 0.2 cooler than the airport and that morning was blowing a warmish nor-wester at 16C – the wrong direction for the front door so I took a reading in the yard in full breeze.

Anyway – here is the chart, of suburban air temperature read in the dark minus the Canberra Airport reading off the www. Days of greater contrast tend to have clear skies – rainy days tend to show the least contrast. Average contrast over the 75 days – 3.7 degrees.

I wonder if readers ever try similar comparisons in their local region.

Note my thermometer is a little battery powered “thermistor” gadget with a metre of wire, digital readout to 0.1deg – which I had calibrated informally against two liquid in glass thermometers.

The force of our time – Chinese steel production 1980-2013

Hard working people want their lives improved.
I keep hearing on the mainstream media about the end of the Australian mining boom. So I was curious to see what was happening with steel production numbers.
All statistics from World Steel Association
first chart 1980-2013 annual production.

Then 2009-Feb2014 monthly production – red M = March 2014

The first quarter 2014 is up over same period in 2013
China 1st qtr 2014 201053
World 1st qtr 2014 404030
China 1st qtr 2013 191745
World 1st qtr 2013 389740
and China in March 2014 produced 70million t.
I am not sure what “boom” is ending but if we can not manage prosperity out of this there is something wrong in our national life.
