Coal to Liquids – Oil security for Australia – but too sensible for Governments

David Archibald sets out what a Government with Australia’s real interests at heart should be doing to ensure energy security. The seven page pdf is only 120Kb – so go on – download it. David relates energy issues to world history with a nice sweep.
And I do like his advice to – “Repeal all the carbon-related legislation and close the Department of Climate Change”
Yes David – Australia would be more secure and prosperous.

Commonwealth public servant ‘decision makers’ slaving away for $20 per hour

I recently made an FOI request to the Australian Commonwealth Department of the Environment – for correspondence relating to the collapse of the NT Henbury Station (owned by RM Williams) carbon farming scheme. Where we are told the Commonwealth had invested $9mill of your precious tax dollars.
I requested under FOI – correspondence for 2011-12 and got back a letter saying how very difficult and time-consuming it all would be and quoting me a charge of $3,562.05 which is mostly “decision-making time”, 157.42hrs at $20 per hr = $3,148.45.

Four and a half weeks “decision-making” assuming a 35hr week.
Does anybody know of any public service “decision makers” on the princely pay of $20 per hr – I am no authority on current pay rates – would some cleaners work for that ?

A month is a long time in carbon farming – QANTAS with egg on their face

On September 10th, 2012 I posted – “Qantas makes announcements about buying carbon credits”. In that I drew attention to the entire scheme being far from set in concrete by saying. “This all sounds as though what QANTAS announced as a done deal – is still a work in progress.”
Have I been proved correct – here we are a month later and the ABC is reporting – “Outback carbon farming venture faces shake-up”.
Shake-up might be praising it – reads like a major change in direction to me – “…going back to school.” –
“…the board felt leadership “needed refreshing”.” –
These two elements have been used since a long time and can become very agonizing if they have to be completed in the formal environment of a classroom. pfizer viagra 100mg All Notes Reviewable Another huge benefit when making a decision about which treatment suits you best. levitra prices There may be pre-determined factors and specification for the batch of dosage amount. new.castillodeprincesas.com/directorio/seccion/salones/?wpbdp_sort=field-1 levitra samples Your prescription will only be filled in a reputable licensed facility which may be located in India, UK, Canada, USA, or elsewhere, depending on availability and price at the time you viagra no prescription need! “The value of those carbon credits … are next to nothing,” he said.
I have just noticed that the Govt/RM Williams deal goes back to mid-2011 too.
The odour of wasted taxpayers money just gets stronger.

Garnaut rides bandwagon talking down mining amidst GreenLabor spin

There is so much spin around these days – I like the way Prof Ross Garnaut is intro’d as “Former Hawke government economist…” – heavens above, how many decades ago was that. Surely they are not trying to distance RG from his greatest work when he was commissioned by GreenLabor in Nov 2010 to provide an independent update to his 2008 Climate Change Review.

Talking about spin – I love this SMH headline – “Mining threat to Swan’s surplus”. Sorry mate – you got that dead wrong – mining is no threat to anything – it is crazy GreenLabor out-of-control spending that is the “…threat to Swan’s surplus”.

Example of how mineral exploration is strangled by Green & Red Tape

Just saw this news item – “A long wait for new Tanami tenements” – in fact a six year wait.
Of course the legal and quasi-legal “leasing” costs would have been mounting all of that time. Crazy way to run a country, to handicap investors who want to spend their hard earned on mostly low impact activities to add to the National store of knowledge about our mineral resources. Minerals which if mined will help keep this country in a manner it has become used to. In this case the company Northern Minerals NTU has a market capitalization of $64Mn so can stand the cost of a wait like this. Many exploration companies are a tenth the size or less.

Qantas makes announcements about buying carbon credits

I noticed Andrew Bolt picked up this story from July – and the questioning article from the Australian Farm Institute. My curiosity was raised by another ABC article from ABC Rural in the NT – “Henbury carbon credits clear for take-off”. Where against the tone of the headline – the article states – “… The rangelands methodology that the Henbury Conservation Project depends upon has been submitted but is yet to be finalised, so Mrs Pearse says the first sale to Qantas is still months off. “We have to wait for the domestic offset integrity committee to have a good look at that methodology and then that will go out to public consultation for three months. “So we’re not expecting an approved methodology any time soon, it’s still a long path.”
This all sounds as though what QANTAS announced as a done deal – is still a work in progress.
And of course at the end of 2010 QANTAS announced “…New Carbon Offset Provider”, a private Euroland company Climate Friendly owned by South Pole Carbon – so what has happened that CF and SPC can not supply what QANTAS requires.
