Finally got around to assembling a rain history for the Brisbane River catchments. More to say at the above link.
This is the graphic.

  1. Good work, Warwick.
    When we both get a grant to keep the proverbial from the door we can get down to recontructing the soil profile history from the daily rainfall figures. Some initial work on small samples indicates that changes in frequency and intensity, combined with vegetation change are having the major impact on catchment water yield.
    The most interesting aspect is that generally weather that is good for dams is bad for farmers and wildlife, and vice versa.

  2. Interesting graph Warwick I’ve been looking for this sort of analysis. I think you need to put a bit more time into your criticism of the ‘worst on record drought’ claims, as the diagram you show only looks at the past 36 months. You’ll agree that the drought has lasted significanlty longer than this. For instance look at the map from Aug 02 to Jul 05, it also shows significantly reduced rainfall. Superimpose these, and preferably earlier data then show us that we are not experiencing a record.

  3. Gidday Andrew,
    Have you seen the discussion at;

    Pertinent facts are;
    [1] Rainfall data coverage in the catchment is not great and I do not have it all but I think most of what I do not have is from recent decades.
    [2] It seems odd that one of the responsible authorities has not assembled ALL the rain data (applies to catchments for other Australian cities too) and made an analysis public.
    From what I can see the Premiers claim might squeak home by narrow margin but there would be no statistical robustness in the result.
    If you want the annual data from my graph you can email me inward da da warwickhughes.com

  4. How does this compare with Brisbane CBD? I would be very interested to see Brisbane’s rainfall on the same graph.
