Did somebody forget to invite the IPCC to COP18 ?

This heads-up from Mike Haseler in sunny Scotland. IPCC head honcho Dr Rajendra K Pachauri whining that – “For the first time in the 18 years of COP, the IPCC will not be attending, because we have not been invited,” he told Gulf Times in Doha. COP18 is to be held from November 26 to December 7.
This will be major sleep-loss event for me.
Is it my imagination or are events getting weirder ?
Maybe the invite is in the mail.

  1. Sorry to say it, but Pachauri is a disgrace to science.

The point of IPCC Chairman attending UNFCCC meetings has always been to set a tone of alarm at the beginning of the discussions so as to gee them up to take “action” on emission cuts.
Bob Watson did it, and so does Pachauri. Pachauri has even been quite open about the political role he sees for the IPCC in goading the UNFCCC:

There was a need for a dialogue on what commitments nations should make in a second wave after Kyoto, he said. “I think that the science must provide a compelling reason and a logic to take those steps, and this is what I hope the IPCC will be able to do in the future,” he added.

Yet useful idiots like Kevin Rudd still descibed the IPCC as

4000 essentially humourless scientists in white coats who go around and measure things and have been doing so for about 20 years

Pachauri’s latest intervention, reported in main post here, repeats the claim that yields from rain-fed agriculture could fall 50% by 2020. This has been extensively debunked in the press and was singled out by the InterAcademy Council Review of the IPCC as a claim for which there was a “weak evidentiary basis”. The Review also quoted the claim as an example of how IPCC

guidance on reporting uncertainties was not consistently followed in the fourth assessment, leading to unnecessary errors. For example, authors reported high confidence in statements for which there is little evidence, such as the widely quoted statement that agricultural yields in Africa might decline by up to 50 percent by 2020.

There is no way Pachauri can be unaware of this. To make the “Africagate” claim again is a blatant attempt to deceive.

  2. Sunny Scotland?

The only place in the world where if the sleet stops coming down is horizontal sheets and turns to rain rushing past the nether bits of out kilts … that we call it global warming!
