My attention was caught by the release of the new version of the UK Met Office / Prof Jones global land temperatures – CRUT4. Just quickly pulling up data plotted as 5 degree grid cells from the KNMI Climate Explorer – for the broad Australian region as per these maps. These are anomalies for 2007 relative to the 1961-1990 period.
Checking various Australian grid cells it is clear that on balance CRUT4 finds more warmth than CRUT3.
This chart shows the trends – and CRUT4 warms by 0.67 compared to 0.58 for CRUT3. The chart also shows that from 2006 onwards CRUT4 is jumped up – whereas in early years CRUT4 is always cooler than CRUT3.
There are several puzzling features of the data and here are a few – the Tuvalu grid cell (2 nth of Fiji) gets lost in CRUT4, probably swamped by rising sea levels – the grid cell with Giles Meteorological Office Number: 13017 is blank in both versions – Giles is I think our most remote & purpose built station. No data can be found for 2007 in all the huge island of New Guinea and a large sector of Indonesia. Looking at New Zealand – Dunedin is missing data as is that region east of Wellington.
On the last chart Warwick, 1910 should read 2010. Noticed the deep colour to the North of WA in Crut4, radically different to changes to the N/West, both major changes from Crut3. In fact the whole of WA looks sharply different. What gives?

I do not know why so many grid cells have warmed by two divisions on the colour scale. In the case of Sydney it looks like simply adjusting up the latest version in recent years – will post on that soon.

North Wales saw the warmest temperature, with the mercury reaching 21.7C
South Wales, the temperature rose to 21.2C
Kew Gardens, south-west London, the highest recorded was 19.6C.
Beaches along the south coast were packed and shops recorded extra sales of ice cream and sun cream.
At the National Trust’s Cotehele estate in Cornwall on Saturday, hundreds of people took advantage of the good weather to see the more than 150 varieties of daffodils that grow in the grounds of the Tudor house.
For the first time IN FOUR YEARS the annual daffodil weekend is taking place while the flowers are at their peak and the orchards and gardens at the property near Plymouth was bursting with colours.
Must be “proof” of Global Warming, eh what?
But not all of the UK was as lucky with the conditions.
In Bridlington, east Yorkshire, the temperature was just 9.2C and in Inverbervie, south of Aberdeen, it only reached 6.3C.
And a ten-year-old girl and a man were treated in hospital for hypothermia after their kayak capsized as they paddled close to a popular beach. They were pulled from the water by a lifeboat and a surfer near Salcombe, Devon.
WSJ, this comment is a suggestion for a new article prompted by your mention of “5 degree grid cells”.
I made a plot of population density versus average temperateur at sea level. It was based on population density at 1 degree increments of latitude versus average temperature at sea level. The tend showed a exponential increase of population density as mean temperature increases – which suggests people prefer warmer to colder. I wonder if you could improve on my crude analysis and post an article on the subject.

There are some signs that CRUT4 has been tweaked warmer than CRUT3 in several grid cells to better fit the BoM contoured Mean Anomaly map for 2007.

See how they all go warmer in CRUT4 – which is more in agreement with the BoM gridded data.
The Sydney and Brisbane grid cells show the same warming in CRUT4 which looks more congruent with the BoM gridded data.
I see others too in Qld.
